Samples of reading lesson plan and vocabulary activities

Dear friends,

I have uploaded the presentations for all to view. The credit belongs to those who were involved in developing the slides. Thank you for your hard work.

Reflection...

An anonymous:

" I have learn to get to know my new friends/teachers. They were friendly and helpful through the slot KNOWING YOU KNOWING ME. I have bought a new laptop of my own. I could learn the settings from my students. They are more computer literate than their teacher. I have to learn to be expertise in using the hardware and the software from my new laptop ACER 4740 model. I learn to get more language input from the Internet and not rely on my textbook and workbooks..."

TEACHERS ALWAYS GO ALL OUT....even at the extend of buying new laptop!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL TEACHERS of the 3rd batch!

Problems? We got a lot....

Problems....

Nobody can run from it. Therefore...we have to face it.

Our friends identified some of the problems they encounter in their reading classroom.

1. Limited vocabulary
2. Pronunciation problems
3. Lack of interest in reading
4. Lack of prior knowledge
5. Poor reading aloud skills

Hashimi found his student tendency to find meaning for every word they come across. He developed a technique which is very interesting...

consider this..

what do you think it meant?

do you need to understand every word for the message to be conveyed?

:-D

Presentation time!

Our MBI friends are going to showcase their vocabulary activities based on the GO this morning. I hope to receive emails on the materials so that I can post it here for others to view.

Let see what happen.

Good Luck!

Padilah and friends are the last one to present... :-P

"Kisses are forever" xoxo... very touching...

We think our friends did a great job by presenting with the slides although we have limitations...

cooperation is the key to success...

Hello to our new friends...

It is nice to be back for MBI course and meet new friends. Yesterday was a great and productive day for our new friends.

They agreed on David Wilkins idea "Without grammar very little things can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed".

Some of the ideas...

Lesson Plans

Sharing... that what its all about...

Kindly post your lesson plan here so that we can pool our expertise and put it into good use. Its also good as it gives you some ownership of it so that the other batch of the course will have to quote you as a reference...if they decide to copy or improvise yours...

Check out Asri's!

Amiza and friends emailed me their materials for the vocabulary activities..

Reflection time!!

its wrapping up session...

my fellow coursemates are rather quiet this evening. They are cracking their heads on the reflection...hehe

The reflection needs to answer some of these questions

1. What have I learnt?
2. What changes can I make in my classroom?
3. What do I find most useful in this course? Wny?
4. What challenges did I face in this phase?
5. How useful were the resources?

Ok... Have fun!

Problems of teaching reading in the classroom

The teachers highlighted some of the problems and challenges they encounter in their reading classroom. The problems are identified in order to understand and reflect on their teaching practices.

1. Limited vocabularies
2. Lack of interest in reading
3. Poor background knowledge
4. Students' proficiency level
5. Lack of prior knowledge on the reading topic
6. Low confidence level
7. Poor learning strategies
8. Students' attitude such as laziness, high dependency on the teacher's input
9. Pronunciation
10. Linguistic deficiency-problems in understanding

Norlida, Asliza, Suraya and Norazilawati claimed that teachers' limited time in preparing the lesson plan also one of the contributing problem to their reading classroom. Other weaknesses highlighted on the teacher's part are inappropriate materials selection and limited interaction with the students.

Anisah and the guys also mentioned a controversial statement-students understanding are exam oriented.. hmm...do i got it right? Danger...its war zone if we are talking about our exam oriented culture..

Working with Words in the Reading Classroom

The Phase Two has just begun...

29 English Language (EL) teachers from the Secondary school in Perlis will undergo a three day course starting today...

Many more will later involve in this course in the future.

This blog is set up to accommodate information regarding this course, materials and feedback from the participants.

The morning session started with reflection on the teacher's teaching practices in their reading classroom...having done that, changes are outlined in hope of a conducive reading classroom.

The session move on for the teaching of reading with the focus on vocabulary. The teachers identified the importance of teaching vocabulary and look into some issues in teaching vocabulary.

To be continued...
